I received notification from the State of Colorado this week that I am now registered in the database as an “Unlicensed Psychotherapist”. What this means is that I can legally practice as a Psychotherapist and incorporate psychotherapeutic process into the body of work I offer my clients.

My work has been heading that way for years, and now the time has finally come to launch this new part of myself. Registration is simply another step towards acknowledging who I am….

I am a therapist, a healer. That’s what I do, that’s who I am.

…and I LOVE it!

Helping people is my passion and my purpose, and registration is just another step along the way to emerging fully as a therapist in the world. And yes, I am still practicing and offering Massage Therapy, I’m simply adding another tool to my body of work for those who want/need it.

So, please join me as I celebrate this symbolic moment!

with love,

Lucien

.

So, I cut my knee DEEPLY last night (Tuesday). I didn’t go to the emergency room because I don’t have health insurance and wanted to wait until this morning so I could go to People’s Clinic. However, this morning I went to People’s Clinic and after the first Dr. nearly fainted and had to leave the room, the 2nd Dr. said it was too serious for them to treat and sent me over to the Boulder Community Hospital Emergency Room. I’m released for now, but unfortunately I waited too long for stitches, so they gave me a tetanus, anti-biotics and I’ll need to go back to the ER on Saturday for suturing. Two ER visits in one week! (Insert ironic comment)

For a more involved story read below… and beware, I’m including semi-graphic photos, so if you get queasy with that kind of stuff, don’t look!

What happened…

The Booby-trapped Dish Rack:

I was in the kitchen getting some water when I accidentally bumped into the dish rack full of drying dishes. A glass Ball jar dove head first out of the dish rack towards the floor. With both hands occupied I reflexively went to “catch”/stop the jar with my leg, shattering it with the side of my right knee against the cabinet in the process. I didn’t feel hurt, but when I looked down I saw a perfect 1.5 inch cut in my pants. I pulled up my pant-leg and looked directly into the deepest, cleanest cut I’d ever seen! It was like a living anatomy slide of the superficial layers of the knee. Skin cut perfectly, fascia sliced and separated, revealing the muscle belly bulging underneath!

Sark and Gemma to the rescue!

I immediately called a few people, and Sarkis and Gemma were there within 15min. Because I don’t have health insurance we decided to clean it well and close it with butterfly steri-strips and wait until morning to go to People’s Clinic. That was my first mistake. I should have gone right to the Emergency Room, but I learned that too late. If you need stitches, go right away! So I did what I know how to do… wrap it, elevate it, ice it, and rest it. I also took some Advil, then went to bed congratulating myself for crafting such a savvy plan to save so much money. Ugh…

People’s Clinic… NOT for emergencies!

This morning Gemma took me to People’s Clinic where I had to first register with the finance department to qualify for treatment. After the financial formalities I got an appointment and saw Doctor #1; a very nice woman who looked visibly shaken when she saw the wound. She faltered for a minute or so, then almost fainted and had to leave the room and get another doctor. Being quite seasoned, the second Doctor got right in there (while I used a string of profanities) and we all got to see that it was far deeper and more severe than we had originally believed. He admitted that it was a little too much for what they were equipped to handle and I was sent to the Emergency Room at Boulder Community Hospital. Adios fantasy… hello reality!

Boulder Community ER: What a gift!

The experience at Boulder Community Hospital ER was wonderful. They were fast, efficient, knowledgeable, and exceptionally warm and caring. For a trip to the ER it was really quite satisfying to be taken care of so well. I was impressed. However, by that time it was far too late to do stitches.

“Delayed Closure”

Because of the endemic staff viruses, bacteria and such that live on the skin and in the air, if a wound goes more than 6 hours without being closed properly they typically do what’s called an “open-closure”. That means you put the patient on anti-biotics to make sure no infection can settle into the wound, keep the wound open while the medicine sets in, and close it after they have had plenty of time to work in the system. I was also given a tetanus shot. I’ll be going back to the ER on Saturday for suturing.

So, in the end, I tried to save myself money and will end up with TWO visits to the ER this week. But I’m learning there are ways to get my expenses covered if I don’t have insurance, so overall I’m just happy to be getting good care.

So for now, I’m laid up on the couch with an opportunity. I’m very much looking forward to the life lessons waiting to be gleaned from all this, but for now I’m starting with… if you don’t have health insurance, don’t try to catch glass jars with your knee.

Here are a few pictures. Don’t look if you get queasy easily.

I just signed up to accept credit card payments on my iPhone through a company and device called Square. I’m very excited about it!

The concept is simple: Using a little device that plugs into the headphone jack of the phone, I turn my iphone into a secure credit card terminal. This is so great! Lot’s of people ask me if I accept credit cards and now I can say “yes!”.

Check out the video.

I love integrating technology into my healing work with people. And as a small business owner it makes it easier to compete with larger establishments if I can accept credit cards without a merchant account. More details coming soon…

Thank you Square!
